Dental implants

Dental implants are used as roots to hold replacement teeth in place. They are used in 3 situations:

The procedure

  1. Your dentist or oral surgeon inserts a small metal screw into the jaw;
  2. With time, the latter integrates with the bone structure;
  3. The screw shape implant forms a solid base for supporting one or more artificial teeth.

Implants maintenance

Since the implant fuses with the bone structure, we can treat it as a natural tooth. However, being more fragile, it will be necessary to clean it more delicately with the toothbrush and the dental floss. Gently brushing all surfaces of the implant is paramount; a toothbrush with a longer tip will help you clean the back surface of the implant. At least once a day, it is recommended to gently floss. Attention must be given at the junction of the implant and the gingiva.

The implants are not suitable for all. Here are the prerequisites:

Bone graft

During chewing, the pressure exerted by the teeth on the jaw stimulates the growth of the bone. Following the loss of teeth, this stimulation disappears and this is what causes the reduction of bone mass. If the bone structure is too weak to insert an implant, a bone graft may be considered. Your dentist or specialist will confirm if the graft is required for you.
